County incident report (2024)

On June 10, 2024, Deputy Z. Currin was dispatched to the 8600 block of Highway Forty-Seven for a disturbance. Chase City Police Department was requested to respond to this call because of the vicinity of the call. Deputy Currin continued to the residence and found that the two occupants were having a verbal disagreement with each other due to being under the influence of alcohol. Ana Pena, 43-year-old-female from Chase City was arrested and charged with Drunk in Public.

On June 11, 2024, Deputy James Short was dispatched by Mecklenburg County Emergency Communications Center to the area of River Wynd Apartments for a man with the intent to commit murder. Clarksville Police Department responded along with the deputies of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. As the Clarksville Police officer searched the area, she made a loop coming back out and noticed a male that appeared from behind a building. Upon her initial contact she identified Ja’Lieg Cofield, a 19-year-old male from Clarksville, who admitted that he was the caller. After Deputy Short arrived the suspect confirmed that he walked to this location to confront other suspects, investigated the call for service, removed a weapon and arrested Cofield for Attempted Murder. Cofield is being held without bond at the Meherrin River Regional Jail currently.

On June 13, 2024, deputies were dispatched to the 15500 block of Highway Forty-Seven for a missing persons call. The patrol deputies and the Criminal Investigative Division all responded. The caller was supposed to pick up the victim for a doctor’s appointment. Upon searching the residence, he was not located. Sergeant Bruce King deployed K-9, Bak, and located the missing person in a small pond on the property. Chase City Fire Department, Mecklenburg County Emergency Services, and Southside Rescue assisted in recovery of the body. The victim was then transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for an autopsy.

On June 16, 2024, at 8:43 PM, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was requested by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office to respond to1100 block of L P Bailey Memorial Highway for a boat that had capsized with three (3) occupants inside. This 8-hour situation turned out to be a recovery.

On June 18, 2024, Corporal A. Desantis was dispatched to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, for a victim who wanted to report stolen items. Corporal Desantis spoke with the victim, who reported a 13’ fiberglass fishing rod and 6000 Daiwa reel was taken from his fishing spot behind the John H. Kerr Dam on May 21, 2024. The victim at the time went to the restroom and once he returned the fishing apparatus was removed.

On June 19, 2024, Deputy Jason Sponaugle was dispatched by the Mecklenburg Emergency Communication Center to respond to the 500 block of River Wynd Drive for a reported Larceny. Once on scene, the victim reported on June 14, 2024, while hosting a small get together, someone removed a firearm from her residence. The firearm has been entered as stolen.

On June 20, 2024, Corporal Josh Watts and Deputy Keon Richardson were dispatched to 920 E. Atlantic Street, South Hill for a report of the larceny of a vehicle in the County of Mecklenburg. The victim reported that the day prior he spoke with two individuals about doing some work on a van located at a church located at 142 Morris Town Circle. On this day, while working on the van, he asked Donovan Jones to retrieve a tool from his 2017 dark blue Honda Civic. At this time, he heard the vehicle crank up and leave. The owner of the vehicle did not give permission for the two suspects to use the vehicle. Once back at the scene of Morris Town Circle, the deputies noticed the vehicle had returned with the two suspects inside. Jones is a 23-year-old male from South Hill and Corrina Pettit is a 43-year-old female from Chase City. At this time, Deputies arrested Donovan Jones and Corrina Pettit. The accused was transported to the South Hill Police Department and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. Jones was held without bond and Pettit was held on a $5,000 bond.

On June 21, 2024, Deputies from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the River Ridge Community for a bomb threat made online. While Deputy Jewell and Deputy Aston were on scene the investigation concluded several threats were made online to include the use of modern chemicals, useless microwave, and a drone. Sergeant Bruce King and Deputy Aston remained on scene while Deputy Jewell obtained two warrants for Threat to Bomb/Burn in writing and Harassment by Computer. Once back on scene, Mason Gregory, Jr. was arrested. The 57-year-old male from Bracey was held with no bond.

Also on June 21, 2024, Lieutenant Byrt Carnes responded to the 700 block of Clary Lane in Bracey for a reported stolen farm equipment. Once on scene, the victim reported a red 8-foot 3-point hitch disk removed from the property. This larceny happened between June 15th and the reporting date.

On June 22, 2024, Deputy Adrian Guerrero was working routine patrol on the South Hill Highway 58 Bypass, when he noticed a car speeding. He received a high audible tone that indicated the car was traveling 73 miles per hour in a posted 55 mph zone. Upon stopping the vehicle, Deputy Guerrero identified the driver, Brittany Taylor. Taylor is a 26 -year-old female from South Hill. Deputy Guerrero noticed signs of an intoxicated driver. Taylor was given Field Sobriety Test. She was then placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence 1st offense.

Deputy Nathan Towery was dispatched to a Larceny of a Firearm call on June 22, 2024, by the Mecklenburg County Emergency Communication Center. Deputy Towery spoke with the victim who stated that during the hours 02:00-04:00 AM while at a party on Lakeview Lane in Clarksville, someone went into his vehicle and removed the firearm. This firearm has been entered as stolen.

On June 23, 2024, Deputies were dispatched at 3:06 PM to the Liberty Hill Access of the John H. Kerr Dam for a drowning. Upon arrival Deputy Jewell and Corporal Tyler Duncan arrived on scene. According to witnesses, the victim jumped off the dam and while swimming back he was swept under by the current. A witness swam into the water removed the body from the water. Once to the shore, lifesaving efforts were performed. Those efforts were unsuccessful. The victim was a 37-year-old male from Norlina, North Carolina.
